Profile Bio Text
Alec John Such was born on November 14th, 1952 in Yonkers, New York. Alec came from a poor family, he even worked as a bootblack when he was still a child. His parents wanted him to play the violin, his mother played the violin and his father a Gypsy Hungarian instument called the cimbalem, but he didn't like it.
On his teen years, he met a group that played around his house, the band needed a bassist and Alec decided to do it. He started playing the bass, without knowing how to do that, with a borrowed bass, but before long he learnt how to totally dominate the instrument. Alec played in several bands such as Cold Sweat, Phantom's Opera (where he met Tico Torres) and The Message (where he met Richie Sambora). Alec was Bon Jovi's bass player from the bands formation until 1994.
The separation
According to interviews with Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora in an episode of Behind the Music, Such was dismissed from the band for unsatisfactory performance during live concerts. Also his quality of session recordings during the Cross Road album were a contributing factor to his dismissal from Bon Jovi. However, viewers were not able to hear his side of the story; he declined to be interviewed by the show. There's many rumors about the cause of his separation from Bon Jovi. The most popular is that he was fired after giving away on an interview private information about what happened backstage on Bon Jovi Concerts. Jon Bon Jovi declared regarding that"What happens in the family, stays in the family". On Bon Jovi's Biography special Richie Sambora claimed that Alec "was tired" and that with Bon Jovi's ambitions "you need to keep up". Whether Such was fired for subpar performances, quit on his own merits, or left for other reasons has still not been definitively answered. It is still a heated topic for debate among Bon Jovi fans to this day.
Hugh McDonald took over Such's position as bassist, having already played on several albums from Bon Jovi's debut onwards. However, he is not an "official" member of the band, since the members agreed not to officially replace Alec and therefore does not appear on album artwork or publicity shots.
Carrer after Bon Jovi
After leaving Bon Jovi, Such has managed a couple of local New Jersey bands, and also owns a motorcycle shop in New York City. Alec managed the Chicago-based rock band 7th Heaven in 1998 along withJames Young of the band Styx.
Other facts
Alec collects antique guns for a hobby. He is so proud of his colllection that he even took one of his guns to a concert on 1983 while the band was opening for ZZ Top at the Madison Square Garden in NYC. He was stopped by the authorities and was taken to the police department. It took him and the band hours to explain that he didn't mean any harm.
Alec also likes horses and motorcycles. He owns a bike shop in New York. Alec had a motorcycle accident in September 1996.
Alec cameoed with Bon Jovi live on stage in 2001 during "Wanted Dead Or Alive" at the Tweeter Center in Camden, New Jersey and Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
