Dirk Werner Nowitzki (German pronunciation: ) (born June 19, 1978) is a German professional basketball player who plays for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). An alumnus of R�ntgen Gymnasium and DJK W�rzburg basketball club, Nowitzki was drafted ninth overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1998 NBA Draft, and was immediately traded to the Mavericks, where he has played ever since. Standing at 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m), Nowitzki plays the power forward position but also has the mobility, size, and shooting ability to play the other frontcourt positions, center and small forward.

Dirk Nowitzki was born in W�rzburg (de), Germany, on June 19, 1978. His father, J�rg, played handball and his mother, Helen, starred for the German women`s national basketball team. Following in his father`s footsteps he played handball first and did not pick up basketball until he was thirteen. Right before the NBA draft, Dirk completed his mandatory military service in the German army from 9/1/97 to 6/30/98. During the summer break, he frequently travels back to German and is a welcome guest on German TV (de) shows. His older sister, Silke, works for the NBA in International TV. When Dirk was 16 years old, Holger Geschwindner, the captain of the 1972 German Olympic Team, noticed this tall and skinny kid while attending one of his games. Impressed with Dirk`s intuitive understanding of the game he offered to coach Dirk individually.
