Couple Profile
Juhi Chawla grew up in a family where education, etiquette and proper up bringing were essential. Born in Ludhiana, Punjab, India on November 13, 1967, Ms. Chawla was well educated, first at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, and subsequently at St. Xavier`s Mumbai and Sydenham College. One could say her acting career actually began when she performed in a stage play at school, playing Mala in "Mala Meri Jaan."
Before becoming one of the best actresses in Hindi movie history, Ms. Chawla won the Femina Miss India pageant in 1984 at the age of 16. She then traveled to Miami, Florida, to complete in the Miss Universe competition. While she did not win, she did win the trophy for Best National Costume during the competition for a ghagra choli she claims to have purchased from Kala Niketan. Ms. Chawla recalled that, while she felt she would not win the competition, she would make the most of the experience and, with her mother joining her, enjoyed meeting new people, taking numerous photos ("All out-of-focus, with somebody`s head cut off!"), and visiting Disney World.
She decided her chosen career would be as an actress in the Bombay-based (Mumbai) Hindi film industry known informally as Bollywood, beginning with her first film, Sultanat, in 1986. While later considered one of Bollywood`s most alluring actresses, Ms. Chawla`s career has always been known for her bubbly, innocent, "girl next door" image. Indeed, Ms. Chawla herself is known, throughout the Bollywood film industry, for her effervescent personality, her warm smile, and her beguiling giggle. Her career, at first, was marked with unmemorable films, but when she appeared with Aamir Khan in his screen debut in the "Romeo and Juliet" inspired Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, both were became immediate stars and were declared the hottest new on-screen couple. More pairings with the actor followed, including Love, Love, Love, but none lived up to their original success initially. She refused to star in roles that might ruin her sweet girl persona. However, when she appeared in a simple white top on the beach in the movie Lootere, she added "glamorous" to her image as well. More films such as Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (for which she won the Filmfare Award for best actress) and Ishq, both with Aamir Khan, as well as Yash Chopra`s Darr, solidified her popularity. Another popular pairing was that with close friend, Shah Rukh Khan, and films such as Duplicate and Yes Boss, made their on-screen pairing as popular as those with Aamir Khan. She became a constant fan favorite, a solid dramatic actress, and showed a genuine gift for comedy.
Ms. Chawla became a producer in 2000 and, joining with Shah Rukh Khan and director Aziz Mirza, formed the production company, Dreamz Unlimited. Sadly, the company`s first two films, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (much loved by the team) and Asoka, did not perform well at the box office. Their third film, Chalte Chalte brought success for the company, but the company has not produced another film since.
Ms. Chawla has continued to work steadily throughout her career, taking only brief times off to have children: very rare in Hindi film industry. She married Jay Mehta, an industrialist, in 1998, and the couple has two children: a daughter, Jhanvi, and a son, Arjun. In recent years, Ms. Chawla has been known for doing more "parallel cinema" roles that are more dramatic, and even controversial, including 3 Deewarein (in which she won the Star Screen Award for best supporting actress), and My Brother Nikhil. She has said she wishes to continue doing roles that are appropriate for her at this stage of her life, turning down roles that are younger than her age ("I don`t think I will look good running around the trees now.").
Not only does Ms. Chawla perform in films in Hindi, she has also done films in other Indian languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, and in her native Punjabi. During her career, Ms. Chawla has also continued to model and be a product ambassador for many companies in India, including Rich Instant Coffee, Ashoka Frozen foods, and Dena Bank. She is also active in various causes, including animal causes (Ms. Chawla is a vegetarian and has a great love for pets) such as PETA, her decision to donate her eyes, and as a goodwill ambassador for hearing impaired children to raise funds for their treatment.
Ms. Chawla, though not as active in the industry as she once was, continues to shine in the Hindi films as one of its most constantly popular, creative and versatile actresses, with more film projects on the horizon. She recently received critical praise for her small, but important role in Salaam-E-Ishq. After demonstrating a lovely singing voice at an awards event with director Karan Johar, giving a rendering of "Le Chalein" from My Brother Nikhil to a thrilled audience (Ms. Chawla has been taking classical music training for more than five year
