Couple Profile
On 8th December 1974, Kim Louise Medcalf was born in Bromley, Kent, to parents Diane and Peter, where she grew up in a loving family with her 2 older brothers.
Kim first discovered her flare for performing at a young age when she was asked to do some solo singing in a school Christmas play. She was only 5 years old but loved the performance, and even made all the `grannies` on the front row cry - something to this day she does not know if that`s because they loved or hated her performance!
Although Kim took part in various school productions and describes drama as her favourite school subject this was not one of her A-Level choices, instead she opted to study english, history and biology at Newstead Wood School for Girls. However, the passion she felt for acting was still apparent so she also attended drama club throughout school. At the age of 17 Kim auditioned for a place at the prestigeous RADA, but was turned down being told she was too young.
After this devestating blow, at the age of 18 Kim decided to leave all her securities and everything she knew to travel around South East Asia with a friend for 6 months.
For now Kim`s acting career was on hold, so she decided to follow in the footsteps of her lawyer brother and attended Bristol University to complete a 3 year degree in mostly medical law.
Later, when Kim had aquired the qualification she realised being a company lawyer was not in her calling and ended up working in customer management and marketing for Unilever. However, she still had not forgotten about acting, and as part of her job she would work with toilet cleaner `Domestos` - something her Father, an owner of a cleaning company was proud of, and gave demonstrations to customers in Morrison`s supermarket. This was the one chance she would get to perform, but it left her thinking `What am I doing?`
Still determined to pursue a career in acting Kim would go to open auditions such as `Starlight Express` on her days off, but when everyone else would have glossy photographs, Kim would go along with passports. Each time she was left disappointed, so in the next couple of years Kim had several jobs such as office work, a waitress, a nursery nurse and she also worked in a chocolate factory for a while.
When she was aged 25 the subsequent life changing moment came when Kim was holiday in France with friends, when one night they were discussing what they wanted out of life. With the right encouragement they assured her that if she didn`t do something about acting there and then, it would never happen. Intent on fulfilling the dream she desired so much, when she arrived home Kim rang several drama schools until she was offered a place at London`s Central School of Speech and Drama, which she saved up for a year to put herself through the 8 month course.
After Kim completed the course she performed in `The Beggars Opera` at the National Theatre, was an ensemble singer at the Royal Festival Hall in `Welcome Ode to Kurt Maser`, and played the lead role of Venus in Kurt Weill`s musical `One Touch of Venus` at the King`s Head Theatre, Islington. Other theatre credits include Babe Williams in `The Pajama Game` and Isabella in `Measure for Measure` in Bromley.
Kim`s big television break then came in 2002 in the form of the revival of BBC1`s soap EastEnders character Sam Mitchell, daughter of matriarch Peggy. After a series of 3 grueling auditions Kim was successfully cast as Sam, a role formerly played by Daniella Westbrook. Kim`s first episode was aired on 29th January 2002 in a storyline involving her in a lapdancing club in Spain. From that moment on it was made clear of Kim`s potential, giving her a wide fanbase and making her a household name.
When Kim had been part of EastEnders for about 6 months catastrophe struck in the form of a horrific car accident that could of left her dead. She was on the first day of her holiday with her then boyfriend Sam Grant travelling through France on their way to Italy, when her Toyoya Yaris which Sam was driving collided with another car near Calais. It took over an hour to cut Kim out of the wreckage, her leg was shattered, and her wrist and sternum were broken. She still has a metal bar in her leg which sets off all the alarms in Heathrow airport.
Kim first displayed her singing abilities on television when she sang on the EastEnders Christmas Party for 2 consecutive years, taking to the mic to perform her rendition of Mariah Carey`s `All I Want For Christmas`, and also Wham`s `Last Christmas`.
In 2005 as part of Comic Relief, Kim partook as one of the students in Celebrity Fame Academy. For 10 days she got to sing live infront of the nation, further broadcasting her singing talent. Although on the final night she was declared runner-up to Radio 1`s Edith Bowman, she still had the opportunity to sing alongside Jools Holland`s band, and is a winner in our eyes.
On 11th September 2005, Kim sang alongside the B
