Profile Bio Text
Mary Jane Blige (born January 11, 1971) is an American singer-songwriter, record producer and occasional actress. She is a recipient of nine Grammy Awards and four American Music Awards, and has recorded eight multi-platinum albums. She is the only artist with Grammy Award wins in Pop, Rap, Gospel, and R&B. Blige is one of the first artists to popularize the fusion of R&B and Hip-Hop sounds, hitherto known as hip-hop soul. The success of her inaugural song "Real Love"and album What's the 411? earned her the honorific title "Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul." For her part in combining hip hop and soul in the early 1990s and its subsequent commercial success, Blige received the World Music Awards'"Legends Award". In 2007 the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers awarded her its coveted "Voice of Music" Award for her outstanding contributions. ASCAP official Jeanie Weems stated that "[Blige's] music has been the voice of inspiration to women worldwide in both struggle and triumph." That same year, Time included her in its "Time 100" list, a collection of the year's 100 most influential individuals around the world.
Blige started her musical career in 1992, releasing her multi-platinum US selling debut album, What's the 411? on MCA Records and Uptown. What's the 411? gave Blige her first Billboard 200 top ten album, which has continued since the release of her debut album until her latest album, My Life II... The Journey Continues (Act 1) (2011), which became Blige's tenth consecutive album to debut in the top 10 on the Billboard 200. Of her ten efforts, seven have debuted as either number one or two on the chart, a massive feat for any R&B/Hip-Hop artist. For the last twenty years, Blige's work has defined the course of R&B/Hip-Hop music. Her albums What's the 411?, My Life, No More Drama, and The Breakthrough have been cited by many artists and critics as some of the most glaring works of the genre in the last 30 years. My Life, in particular, is considered one of the greatest albums ever recorded according to numerous noteworthy publications, including Rolling Stone (279/500), Time, and Vibe. In 2005, after a slight decline in popularity due to disappointing sales of her 2003 studio album Love & Life, Blige achieved newfound success with the release of The Breakthrough. The album stormed atop the Billboard 200 chart with sales of 727,000, which at the time was the largest first-week sales for any female R&B/Hip-Hop artist. Her seventh effort sold over three millions copies in the United States and seven million worldwide. It also earned her three Grammy Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, and two American Music Awards -- a successful sweep of the recording industry's "Big Three."
Blige also earned high remarks for her work in film and fragrance. She starred in the 2009 Tyler Perry box-office hit I Can Do Bad All By Myself and will play a lead role in the film Rock of Ages, which is set to be released to theaters in 2012. She is a recipient of two Golden Globe Awards nominations for her musical contributions to the films Bobby and The Help, and is a 2012 front-runner for the Academy Award for Best Original Song after making the category's short-list with "The Living Proof." Blige is named to play music icon Nina Simone in the upcoming biopic Nina. In partnership with the Home Shopping Network (HSN) and Carol's Daughter, Blige released her popular "My Life" perfume. The perfume broke HSN records by selling 65,000 bottles during its premier. The scent went on to win two FiFi Awards, including the prestigious "Fragrance Sales Breakthrough" award.
As of 2010, Blige has sold over 50 million albums and 15 million singles worldwide. According to Billboard Magazine Mary J. Blige is one of the top 5 most successful Rhythm & Blues acts of the last decade. The magazine also lists her 2006 hit song Be Without You as the single biggest R&B song of the last decade, as it spent an unparalleled 15 weeks atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. In sum, she has earned nine Grammy Awards, twenty Billboard Music Awards, four American Music Awards, four Bet Awards, and one MTV Music Award. In 2011, Vh1 ranked Blige as the 80th greatest artist of all time. Moreover, she is ranked number 100 on the list of "100 greatest singers of all time" by Rolling Stone magazine.
