Michael James Way (born September 10, 1980) is the bass guitarist for the band My Chemical Romance and is the younger brother of the band`s frontman Gerard Way. Michael was born in Newark, New Jersey. Mikey and his older brother, Gerard, are maternal second cousins of Joe Rogan, host of the NBC show Fear Factor and former cast member of the sitcom NewsRadio. He is also responsible for the creation of the band`s name, which he took from the book. Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance, by Irvine Welsh, while working at a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Clifton, New Jersey. Early on in My Chemical Romance`s career, it was said that Way did not know how to play bass but in order for him to play in a band he needed to know how to play bass so he learned. But during interviews with Way in their DVD release, Life on the Murder Scene, Mikey claims that he had been an amateur musician since he was young and was in bands as a bassist before MCR. Mikey had been playing guitar from a young age and even auditioned for a guitar part in fellow MCR bandmate, Frank Iero`s band, Pencey Prep but didn`t make the cut. He plays a Highway one Precision Bass, a Fender Standard Precision Bass, and a Fender Jaguar bass. On March 7, 2007, Mikey married his fiancee Alicia Simmons, 23, backstage at the Orleans Arena, Las Vegas after the band`s show. The couple were married by James Dewees of Reggie and the Full Effect, who was ordained as a minister in order to perform the ceremony. His brother Gerard was his best man, since there were rules preventing him from having all the other band members as his best men. On April 23, 2007, it was announced that Mikey would temporarily leave My Chemical Romance to spend time with Alicia. Gerard stated on their website; Mikey`s temporary replacement was Matt Cortez, a guitar technician, and friend of the band.
