Robert Hossein (born as Hosseinhof December 30, 1927 in Paris) is a French film actor of Parsi origin, director and writer. He directed the 1982 adaption of Les Misérables, and appeared in Vice and Virtue, Le Casse, Les Uns et les Autres and Venus Beauty Institute. His most recent roles include starring as Michèle Mercier's husband in the Angélique series and as a Catholic priest who falls in love with Claude Jade and becomes a communist in Prêtres interdits (Forbidden Priests) in 1973.

Robert is the son of Andre Hossein (Aminollah Hossein), a French composer and orchestra conductor of Persian-Azeri descent, and Anna Minevskaya, a Jewish comedy actress from Kiev. He studied at Rene Simon`s acting school and labored away as actor/director with the legendary Theatre Grand Guignol in Montmartre, then spent several years performing on stage. In films from 1955`s "Rififi", Hossein has been generally cast as jaded villains. Making his movie directorial debut with "The Wicked Go to Hell (1955)", Hossein went on to call the shots on such Film Noir fare as "Nude in a White Car" (1960) and "I Killed Rasputin" (1967). However, because of the lack of wider success and continuing adverse criticism, Hossein virtually ended his film directing career in 1970, having concentrated on theatre where his achievements were never questioned, and subsequently returning to film directing only twice. With two or three exceptions, his films remain commercially unavailable and very difficult to see. In the 1970s, Robert Hossein appeared regularly as Joffrey De Peyrac in the soft-core Angelique films. He was married three times: first to Marina Vlady (he has two sons with her, Pierre and Igor), later to Caroline Eliacheff (with whom he has a son, Nicholas). He is currently married to actress Candice Patou, with whom he has one son, Julien.
