Selema Mabena Masekela nickname Sal (born August 28, 1971) is an American television host, sports commentator and actor. Sal Masekela is the co-host of the "The Daily 10" one of the highest rated television shows on E entertainment. He is also host of both the X Games and Winter X Games on ESPN. An avid surfer and snowboarder he is described by some as the face and voice of action sports. His career began from humble beginnings as the receptionist/intern at Transworld Publications in 1992, home of TW Snow, TW Skateboarding and TW Surf magazines. He`s gone on to become the cofounder of Stoked Mentoring, an organization dedicated to mentoring at risk youth through actions sports as well as a strong public supporter of the Surfrider Foundation and Life Rolls On. Sal served as a NBA sideline reporter for ESPN during the 2003-2004 season however he was publicly ridiculed by many mainstream sports reporters who took offense to his dread-locked hair and his affiliation with the X Games. ESPN did not bring him back to the sidelines for another season. In 2007 Masekela played the role of himself as the voice of SPEN, in the Oscar nominated, Sony Animation, Surf`s Up. Masakela also appeared on the show Pros vs Joes and won the competition against other broadcasters. Masekela is the son of the South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela, and the older brother of Survivor: Cook Islands contestant Nathan Gonzalez. He is of South African and Haitian descent and was raised in Staten Island, New York and Carlsbad, California (near San Diego, California), where he attended Carlsbad High School. Co-founder of Berkela Motion Pictures with Jason Bergh.
