Skid Row was one of the biggest metal bands around in the early 90's. Pretty boy good looks, heavy rotation on radio/video and the wild stage persona of front man Sebastian Bach shot the band to the top of the metal world, before it all came crashing down with the death of the glam era.
The band was formed in New Jersey by Dave "Snake" Sabo (guitar), Scotti Hill (guitar), Rachel Bolan (bass), Rob Affuso (drums) and Canadian born screamer Bach (ex-Madam X). Sabo was a friend of fellow New Jersey superstar Jon Bon Jovi. With Bon Jovi's help, Skid Row had their management and the opening slot on Bon Jovi's massive 1989 U.S. tour. The debut was a glossy pop-metal affair that took the rock world by storm, selling over four million copies, and spawning two top ten hits. In late 1989 Bach faced several assault charges stemming from a concert incident, and the band's stature continued to rise.
The follow-up was a much heavier album that had the band performing fewer ballads and more "balls to the walls" rockers. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts but failed to contain any hit singles and was a commercial disappointment when compared to the debut. It would be four years before the next full-length album was released, and by this time the music scene had changed. The band attempted to create an updated sound, but neither the fans nor the press seemed to notice and infighting tore the band apart.
A revamped Skid Row emerged in 1999 to tour in support of Kiss. However fans were sceptical as Bach was no longer the front man (hatred towards other members led him to begin a solo career). Johnny Solinger was the new vocalist and Charlie Mills the drummer (before being replaced by Saigon Kick's Phil Varone midway through the tour for financial and family reasons). Reactions to the Solinger fronted Skid Row were mixed, but regardless, Skid Row released new material including 2006's Revolutions Per Minute which included another new drummer in Dave Gara. Meanwhile Sebastian Bach is content to continue with his solo ventures.
